Should I Trust Over The Counter Hearing Aids?
/In August 2017 the Over the Counter Hearing Aid Act legislation was officially signed into a larger bill called the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Reauthorization Act of 2017 (H.R. 2430). This new bill legalizes the sale of over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aids, which was previously banned by the FDA, for those who have a mild or moderate hearing loss.
Currently personal sound amplifiers (PSAPs) are available on the market and range anywhere from $20-$350 and are not regulated by the FDA. Manufacturers of PSAPs are not permitted to call their products hearing aids or claim that their products can help with hearing loss, as they are just considered amplifiers.
Why You Need A Professional
While it may seem beneficial to patients to have a more cost effect alternative to the traditional prescription hearing aids you would get from an Audiologist, there are significant issues to consider. Without a comprehensive audiological exam, it’s impossible to understand the type and degree of hearing loss you may have. This makes it difficult to choose the correct device on your own.
Who Makes The Adjustments?
Your hearing typically changes over time. If you have a gradually declining hearing loss the OTC hearing device cannot be adjusted by anyone since it is a closed device, meaning there are no providers authorized to service them. Whereas, prescription hearing aids can be adjusted specifically for a patient’s hearing loss. They will also automatically adjust based on their environments (noise, cars, echo, restaurants). Having a good relationship with your Audiologist is an important key to your success with hearing devices.
